Ethylene Polymer Grade

CAS Number: 74-85-1
C2H4
Purity: ≥99.9%

Ethylene Polymer Grade (CAS 74-85-1) is a high-purity, naturally occurring hydrocarbon gas, indispensable as a fundamental building block in petrochemical industries.

Description

Ethylene, with the chemical formula C2H4, is a colorless, flammable gas with a faint sweet odor. As the simplest alkene, it possesses a double bond between its two carbon atoms, making it highly reactive and a crucial monomer for polymerization reactions. This polymer grade material is distinguished by its stringent purity specifications, ensuring minimal levels of contaminants that could interfere with polymerization processes or affect the quality of downstream products. Its production primarily involves steam cracking of hydrocarbons such as ethane, propane, or naphtha, a process that breaks down larger molecules into smaller, more reactive ones like ethylene. The molecular structure with its readily accessible pi electrons facilitates addition reactions, making it an extremely versatile intermediate in organic synthesis. High-purity ethylene is essential for producing polymers with consistent properties and performance characteristics, which is paramount for numerous industrial and consumer applications.

Applications

Ethylene Polymer Grade is predominantly utilized as a monomer in the production of various polyethylenes, including low-density polyethylene (LDPE), linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE), and high-density polyethylene (HDPE). These polyethylenes are foundational materials for films, packaging, pipes, and containers. Beyond polyethylene, it serves as a key intermediate in the synthesis of ethylene oxide, which is further processed into glycols for antifreeze and polyester fibers. It is also converted into vinyl acetate monomer for adhesives and paints, ethylbenzene for styrene production, and ethanol, a widely used solvent and chemical intermediate.

Storage & Handling
