Methanol Technical
Methanol Technical, CAS 67-56-1 (CH3OH), is a versatile organic solvent and chemical intermediate used extensively across various industrial sectors.
Description
Methanol (CH3OH), also known as methyl alcohol, is the simplest alcohol, existing as a light, volatile, flammable, and colorless liquid with a distinctive alcoholic odor. It is primarily produced from natural gas, coal, or biomass through catalytic synthesis. Industrially, methanol is a crucial building block chemical, serving as a precursor for numerous other chemical products. Its unique chemical structure allows it to undergo a variety of reactions, including oxidation, esterification, and methylation, making it invaluable in organic synthesis. The 'Technical' grade indicates a purity suitable for industrial applications where precise reagent-grade purity is not strictly required but consistent chemical properties are essential. It is highly soluble in water and many organic solvents, contributing to its broad utility as a solvent and denaturing agent.
Applications
Methanol is widely used as a feedstock in the production of formaldehyde, acetic acid, and methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE). It also finds significant application in the manufacture of various polymers, plastics, and synthetic fibers. As a solvent, it is utilized in the production of paints, varnishes, dyes, and inks. Furthermore, methanol is a key component in the production of biodiesel through transesterification and is increasingly being investigated as a clean-burning fuel or fuel additive in internal combustion engines and fuel cells. Its versatility also extends to its use in wastewater treatment, as an antifreeze agent, and in the pharmaceutical industry.
Storage & Handling
Store in a cool, well-ventilated area, away from ignition sources and incompatible materials. Containers should be tightly closed and properly labeled. Avoid contact with skin, eyes, and clothing. Ensure adequate ventilation during use and implement grounding and bonding techniques to prevent static discharge.
Danger
