1,4-Butanediol
1,4-Butanediol (BDO) is a versatile organic diol and a key intermediate in the synthesis of polymers, solvents, and other specialty chemicals.
Description
1,4-Butanediol (BDO), with CAS number 110-63-4 and chemical formula C4H10O2, is a colorless, viscous, high-boiling liquid that is miscible with water and a variety of organic solvents. As a saturated aliphatic diol, it possesses two primary hydroxyl groups, making it a highly reactive and instrumental building block in organic synthesis. Its chemical structure, consisting of a four-carbon chain with hydroxyl groups at both terminal positions, imparts unique properties that are leveraged across numerous industrial applications. BDO is typically synthesized via various routes, including the Reppe process (from acetylene and formaldehyde), Davy process (from maleic anhydride), and more recently, through bio-based fermentation processes. Its high purity and consistent quality are critical for its downstream applications, where it contributes to the performance characteristics of end products through its role as a precursor or solvent.
Applications
1,4-Butanediol is extensively used as a chemical intermediate in the production of a wide range of polymers, including polybutylene terephthalate (PBT), a high-performance engineering plastic used in automotive components and electrical connectors; gamma-butyrolactone (GBL), a solvent and intermediate for pyrrolidones; and polytetrahydrofuran (PTHF or PTMEG), a key component in polyurethanes, spandex fibers, and elastomers. It also serves as a raw material for the synthesis of tetrahydrofuran (THF), a common solvent, and various esters used as plasticizers and solvents. Furthermore, BDO finds utility in the production of herbicides, pesticides, and other specialty chemicals due to its reactive hydroxyl groups.
Storage & Handling
Store in a cool, well-ventilated area, away from incompatible materials and sources of ignition. Keep containers tightly closed. Handle with appropriate personal protective equipment, ensuring good ventilation to prevent vapor accumulation. Avoid skin and eye contact.
