C3H8O2
Purity: >=99.8%

Propylene Glycol USP (PG USP) is a versatile, high-purity organic compound widely used in various industries for its solvent, humectant, and preservative properties.

Description

Propylene Glycol USP, with the chemical formula C3H8O2 and CAS number 57-55-6, is a colorless, odorless, slightly viscous liquid that is completely miscible with water, alcohols, and many organic solvents. Produced under stringent manufacturing controls, it meets the rigorous standards of the United States Pharmacopeia (USP), ensuring its suitability for applications where high purity and low toxicity are critical. As a diol, it possesses two hydroxyl groups, contributing to its excellent solvent properties and hygroscopicity. Its low volatility and high flash point make it a safer alternative to other solvents in many formulations. PG USP acts as an effective humectant, drawing and retaining moisture, a co-solvent, enhancing the solubility of various compounds, and a plasticizer, improving flexibility. It is metabolically converted to lactic acid, which is a normal metabolic product, contributing to its generally regarded as safe (GRAS) status by regulatory bodies when used appropriately. This combination of physical and chemical characteristics makes Propylene Glycol USP an indispensable component across numerous industrial sectors.

Applications

Propylene Glycol USP finds extensive use across diverse industries. In pharmaceuticals, it serves as a solvent for orally administered, injectable, and topical formulations, and as a humectant in ointments and creams. The food and beverage industry utilizes it as a humectant, solvent for flavorings and colorings, and as a food additive (E1520), as well as in pet food. In cosmetics and personal care, it is a key ingredient in moisturizers, lotions, shampoos, and deodorants, acting as a humectant and solvent. It is also employed in antifreeze and de-icing solutions, heat transfer fluids, and as a base for theatrical fogs and e-liquids for electronic cigarettes due to its low toxicity profile. Furthermore, it is a chemical intermediate in the production of polyester resins and polyurethanes.

Storage & Handling
